Forensic Investigation

Pavement failures occur from the development of cracks and ruts and can take place in the form of a seal or asphalt failure or failure to the supporting pavement basecourse, subbase and subgrade layers.
Before implementing a maintenance strategy, it is important to determine the causes of pavement failures.

STATS conduct detail visual inspection of pavement, followed by non destructive tests such as the Falling Weight Deflectometer Survey, Ground Penetrating Radar Survey, together with the use of localised intrusive tests such as the Instrumented DCP, ASTM DCP, Light Drop Weight tests, to further understand the causes leading to the observed defects. This will be followed by localised intrusive test pitting, coring to examine the insitu layers and collect bulk samples for further laboratory tests. Based on the results, STATS offer to carry out an independent pavement design review and provide rehabilitation measures for the affected pavement.
